Measuring Crab Larval Recruitment


In order to monitor larval blue crab recruitment, we built and deployed 48 larval collectors made of PVC pipe wrapped with hogs hair filter. Collectors were placed at four station in each of the three rivers of the ACE Basin across a range of salinity from 20-35 ppt.


Collectors were either placed at the surface attached to a surface buoy or 1 m above the substrate attached to a concrete anchor block. Here Kirk and Kylie show off the difference between a surface and benthic collector.
